Five local artists to follow for creative inspiration

Writer: Bondi JournalBondi Journal

From entrepreneurs and fashion designers, to photographers, stylists and artists, Bondi and our neighbouring suburbs are a melting pot of creativity.

… And from the stunning clifftops and rolling waves, to diverse sea life and juxtaposition of pastel-hued art deco buildings and sleek, modern homes, there's inspiration at every turn.

So, whether you're looking for that next investment piece, a special gift, or simply an escape from the everyday, read on as we share some of the local area's renowned artists—and chances are, you'll have seen some of their work around town, too.

Ever wondered who's behind the vibrant, uplifting mural in our bar, or unmissable rodeo-esque artwork adorning the walls in Rocker's restaurant?

It's none other than Jakey Pedro, a Noosa-born and bred, Sydney-based artist that has developed a reputation for his signature bold, neo-expressionist style and creative use of pastels. From collabs with the likes of Wrangler and Australian fashion label, Romy, to exhibitions in our home city and Los Angeles, Jakey has established a loyal following both locally and abroad. Need a mood booster? Check out his work here.

Nicola is a former fashion designer who lives and works out of Bondi, and in 2024 was named an Archibald Prize finalist—where the entry featured a portrait of her sister and acclaimed singer-songwriter, Missy Higgins.

A figurative oil painter who depicts the female form and addresses themes including self expression and digital identity, earlier this year Nicola's incredibly detailed works featured in the Tender Memories exhibition at Nanda\Hobbs in Chippendale. Explore her pieces here.

From "UFO" to "Pictures," chances are you'll have danced away to one of Sneaky Sound System's hits—of which Daimon was a member—and over the last 10+ years he's been funnelling his creativity into art.

Abstract and expressionist in style, his contemporary works have been featured across venues ranging from Rae's on Wategos to Matteo Downtown, collections by homewares brand, In The Roundhouse, and beach-ready wares by SUNNYLiFE. Daimon has recently curated a limited release range featuring his favourite prints, too, which you can view over on his website.

Tan has a unique style that sees her thermoform polymer into a range of shapes and forms. Sculptures include Bon Bons, which feature scrunched curves complete with a striking stripe print, through to Periphery (pictured), where you'll find scallop pearls inspired by the sea shells and architecture she comes across in her home suburb of Bondi.

A former set designer, visual merchandiser and stylist, Tan's sculptures have featured in sass & bide boutiques, Mitte Projects in Miami, Woollhara's Litsa Veldekis Gallery, and Galleria Ca' d'Oro in New York, among others. Catch more of her work here.

The once Bondi-based artist and designer now calls Melbourne home, yet you'll still find some of his work around the neighbourhood—such as at Bondi Public Bar. His artistic style is equal parts bold, bright and fun, as he brings us a creative and quirky take on the human form through the use of vibrant colours, and by fusing elements of the real with the surreal.

Harrison is also one half of Parke Studios, a sustainably minded design studio that is based in both Sydney and Melbourne, and which you can find out more about here.
